What Is the Difference Between “Chlorine Bleach” and “Non-Chlorine Bleach”?
Chlorine Bleach
“Chlorine bleach” uses sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient.
Clorox® Bleach and Clorox® Scented Bleach are chlorine bleaches. Cotton, polyester and cotton/poly blends can be safely washed with Clorox® Bleach or Clorox® Scented Bleach.
When selecting which type of bleach to use always check the fabric care label for fiber content and wash instructions. Chlorine bleach is not recommended for some fabrics like spandex, wool, silk, mohair or leather.
Non-Chlorine Bleach
“Non-chlorine bleach” uses hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient.
If in doubt about whether to use bleach, put 1 drop of the bleach appropriate for the item on a hidden part of the fabric. Rinse after 5 minutes and dry. If there is no color loss, you can safely use the bleach tested.
